As Batavia was home to Dr. Bernard Cigrand, father of Flag Day, the Batavia Flag Day Committee would like to celebrate Flag Day, June 14th, with a community-wide patriotic display contest.

The Batavia Flag Day Committee asks Batavia residents, organizations, and businesses to fly our country’s flag on June 14, Flag Day, and to consider going a step further to decorate their homes/businesses/yards/gardens/grounds with patriotic colors, flags, lights, flowers, and decorations.

The Batavia Flag Day Committee will be sponsoring a contest with on-site judging to take place June 9-10 and Facebook judging to take place June 5-10. Winners will be announced at the Flag Day Ice Cream Social on Sunday, June 11, 2017. Please leave all decorations up through at least July 4, Independence Day, if possible.

We thank all Batavia residents, organizations and businesses for flying our country’s flag. A special thank you to those who will be participating in the patriotic decor contest to help make Batavia truly the Flag Day City!

Categories to be judged (same for homes, businesses or organizations):

Most patriotic (best use of red, white and blue colors and flags)
Most unique (creative and unusual; one of a kind)
Best Use of Lights (nighttime patriotic displays)
Most historical (ties in with Dr. Cigrand and his role as the Father of Flag Day)
Best use of plants/florals (all natural decorations in the patriotic colors)
Best “Batavia” display (honors our town as well as Flag Day)
Town Favorite (Online Facebook Voting)

We invite all of Batavia to fly the flag and show your patriotic colors in June and July. But if you are interested in being a part of the Paint Batavia Red, White and Blue décor contest, you’ll need to complete and return the application by May 19, along with the application fee of $15. One winner will be awarded in each of the above categories (homes, businesses and organizations are all considered equal).

On June 3, all entries will be photographed to be placed on the Batavia Flag Day Committee’s Facebook page to allow the public to vote for their favorite entries. Then on June 9 and 10, members of the Batavia Flag Day Committee will visit each entrant’s location and judge their favorites based on theme, overall appearance, and patriotic spirit. All votes will be tallied and winners will be announced during the Flag Day Ice Cream Social on Sunday afternoon, June 11, on the Riverwalk.

Besides helping to make Batavia a beautiful city all summer long, all participants will be listed in an upcoming Neighbors magazine article, in local newspapers, and on the Batavia Flag Day Committee website and Facebook page, and winning entries will also have their photos included in these places.
